<<<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>>>> *** T H E S T A R F L I G H T 2 *** *** B U G F I X P R O G R A M *** Written by KEITH HARD This small bug fix program will permit you to properly save your Starflight II games ANYTIME, ANYWHERE YOU WANT TO!!! OFFICIAL NOTICE___ FROM FLEET COMMANDER KEITH IMPERIAL FLAGSHIP ISS GARBAGE-SKOW BACKGROUND INFO: <<<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>>>> About a week or so ago I bought the STARFLIGHT II game. Needless to say I was in hogs heaven because I'm a fanatic when it comes to the STARFLIGHT and BARDTALE games! (God forbid, I even like to watch STAR TREK!). When I started playing I noticed that I couldn't save any of my games! It would pop up a 'PROGRAM OR DISK ERROR MES'. There was a rotten smell in the air as I realized that the SPEMIN must be up to their old tricks again! (This was an insult beyond endurance!). All Interstel ship commanders are hereby notified of my new EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION, which states, 'DEATH TO ALL SPEMIN SCUM DOGS!!!' I was faced with a hard decision. I could return the game and get my money back, or I could fix it myself. Returning the game was not a viable option with me, (I'm a starflight fanatic remember), so I began repairing the game. After 2 days of non-stop effort I got so mad that I had a stack overflow and spent the next 3 hours on the ceiling blowing off steam!!!!! (I created a lot of new cuss-words for those of you who may be interested). When I came back down to earth I turned off the human interface sections of my brain and triggered my computer access points. I then sat down and created this bug fix program. I wrote this program in the batch language, which is pretty archaic really. I was going to write a fancy 'PASCAL' or "C" version, but to quote the DWEENLE CREATURES "Why bother because we're all going to die anyway". <-------Starflight #2 humor. The real reason is that my batch prototype works and I was eager to start playing as soon as humanly possible! (In other words I was too lazy to make the conversion). I made the bugfix program so that you can save 1 ongoing game instead of 9 games. Originally the bugfix was meant for me, and as you may have surmised I'm hurting pretty bad for disk space. Please feel free to modify the program to suit your own needs. After a week or so of playing the game a strange thought came to me. What if all the Starflight II games have problems saving themselves? And an even worse thought, what if there's not that many people playing the game!!! (This is what prompted me to upload my bugfix program). You probably think I'm a long-winded old fart, especially when your chomping at the bits to start playing the game! Ok, here we go... <<<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>>>> INSTRUCTIONS This program has been tested on IBM machines and should work with compatible's as well. Unpack the file STAR6.ZIP or STAR6.EXE into its own subdirectory. The file CLOUD.EXE is a small program that will give you the location of each star system inside the BIG CLOUD! It will even tell you where to find the shynium planet if you want to know!!! STAR4.BAT is the bugfix program itself. Place a copy of STAR4.BAT into your STARFLIGHT II subdirectory. (I almost forgot, this program works for hard disk users only). Type SF2 and start a new game. Get your ship loaded and leave starport. Then press the ESC button to pull up the starflight menu. NEVER CHOOSE OPTION #1 SAVE GAME AND CONTINUE BECAUSE SOONER OR LATER IT WILL HANG THE SYSTEM!!!!!!!!! Anytime you want to save a game always choose option #2 SAVE GAME AND QUIT. This will take you back to the batch menu. When at the batch menu choose option #4 SAVE LASTSAVE AS GAME #. (This will save your new game as game-1). When this is done go back to the batch menu and choose option #6 QUIT. From now on when you want to play STARFLIGHT II always type STAR4. As you play the game for awhile you will notice that my bugfix program copies and deletes files like crazy! This is nothing to worry about, it has to do this in order to force STARFLIGHT II to save itself properly. Here's the new rundown. You've had a hard day at the office, You've had a hard day at school, Or perhaps your trying to figure out what multiple inheritance means in the pascal language, whatever the case you think to yourself "OH GOD, I NEED TO HAVE SOME FUN FOR A CHANGE!". Of course Starflight II comes to mind. Lets do a walkthru...... Type STAR4. When you are in the batch menu choose option #3 PLAY WHICH SAVED GAME#. It will then ask you "play which saved game 1-9". type " 1 " and then hit ENTER. You start playing the game and your really going to town! You then decide that it might be wise to save your game before you go any further. (Wise choice). HERES HOW TO DO IT Press the ESC button to pull up the Starflight menu. Choose option #2 SAVE GAME AND QUIT. At the batch menu choose option #4 SAVE LASTSAVE AS GAME#. Then at the batch menu choose option #6 QUIT. You must follow these instructions for the bugfix program to work properly. When ready to continue playing type STAR4. <<<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>>>> *** T H E S T A R F L I G H T 2 *** *** B U G F I X P R O G R A M *** Written by KEITH HARD (c) copyright 1990 by Keith Hard FIRESIDE CHAT: I hope that my bugfix program will help many of the STARFLIGHT II users, as well as the STARFLIGHT people themselves.
